Liban Ali, a 20-year-old black man, was racially attacked by four white youths while at a bus stop in Leicester city centre on 15 June 1999. Liban was nearly killed.
Although he has survived, Liban is unable to speak, recognise or remember and has undergone several life threatening operations as a result of severe injuries to his head. Despite overwhelming evidence against all the assailants, the police only charged one with attempted murder.
At the trial, the charge was reduced to grievous bodily harm as a result of plea-bargaining and without informing or consulting the family. The assailant pleaded guilty to the lesser charge and has been sentenced to four years imprisonment.
The family of Liban Ali remain angry and dissatisfied at the manner in which this case has been treated and have condemned both police and CPS actions. They have launched a campaign calling for an inquiry into the case.
