"On one occasion a knife was placed at my throat after I had been dragged out of my bed.
I reported this to the Army and they jailed me 'for my own protection'.
I complained to my officer who denied the extent to which I was being abused and he refused to do anything for me."
Iftikhar Mirza speaking at the NCRM launch meeting, March 1999.
Iftikhar Mirza served 14 years in the British Army, including a spell in the Royal Green Jackets. He left in 1995 after years of verbal racial abuse and repeated physical assaults.
In 1984, he was viciously beaten in his bunk by colleagues who were drunk and attacked him with a broken bottle. He complained of racial abuse but an internal army investigation failed to uphold his complaint.
He is now seeking leave for a judicial review of the original army investigation; his case went to court on 16 April 2000.
