In the early hours of March 22 2000, Zahid Mubarek, a 19-year-old Asian man, due to be released from Feltham Young Offenders that day, was viciously beaten by his racist cellmate.

Zahid died later in hospital after doctors tried to save his life with an emergency brain operation. Zahid, of Walthamstow, East London, had been serving a 90-day sentence for a minor theft offence.

Zahid's assailant, Robert Stewart, 19, of Manchester has been convicted of murder.

The NCRM is calling for a full inquiry into how the prison authorities allowed this murder to take place.
